Apple has said very little about sales of its Apple Watch, but a few tidbits are beginning to emerge from suppliers. The latest nugget may have come from Taiwan’s Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc., a company that crams the watch’s many chips and sensors into a compact case through a process called system-in-package, or SiP. Mark Li, an analyst at Bernstein Research, said an ASE subsidiary told investors on a conference call that it didn’t reach its “break-even volume” of two million units per month in the second quarter.
“The shortfall of Apple Watch is a disappointment,” Mr Li wrote in a note to clients. “We came in with a low expectation but below break-even still surprised us.”
