Nokia. The very word inspires fear in toilet bowls and plaster walls. However, it seems we may be heading back to those days while searching for every phone junkies dream: an indestructible smartphone.
It's happened to all of us. A slip of the hand, a bump in the street. Hell pray it's not done in the rain. A dropped phone seems to be quite commonplace with screen sizes becoming ever larger and closer to a pocket PC. Of course, Samsung will tell you that their S6 Edge can crack walnuts, but who ever drops their phone flat? Also no, you can't charge it in the microwave.
French physicist Ludwik Leibler discovered a new type of polymer called vitrimers. They have properties similar to glass but the best thing of all is, they can repair themselves.
Sadly, it's not fully developed yet so it will be some time until it hits the market.
On the bright side of things, Apple did obtain for a mechanism that can judge when the phone is falling and shift weight to minimise damage.
