Come on. Everybody has encountered a form of this futuristic technology, be it from a movie, book or game. We all dream of how cool it would be if you could project people as a hologram and do all kinds of light shows.
Japanese designers from the Digital Nature Group at Japan's University of Tsukuba have been able to create 3D images using an array of scanners, mirrors and lasers.

These lasers fire at a femtosecond (quadrillionth of a second) and is proven to be safe to the human touch, as opposed to its plasma counterpart which has been shown to burn on contact, as well as being of a much higher resolution.
According to the project's principal investigator Yoichi Ochiai the hologram feels like touching sandpaper. Take a look at this video.
